UK consists of around 34,000 Volunteer Reservists, coming up from all backgrounds, regions and jobs. Reservists are ordinary men and women who devote time to train and serve alongside the Regular Forces. As this requires an average time commitment per year, one can continue being a Reservist and pursuing his/her job.

The Voluntary Reservists act as supplement to the Regular Forces when the Operational demands need it. These Reservists acquire the same skills as their Regular counterparts after receiving the similar world-class training which can be transferred directly to the workplace.The training includes development of core transferable skills like teamwork, self-confidence, leadership and other basic qualities that hold high regards at workplace. Practical skills include training in first aid, health and safety issues, weapons training, and the ability to cope up with extreme situations. The training also includes adventurous activities like white-water rafting, climbing, abseiling and trekking. There are also other specialist skills that are developed amongst the Reservists which include effective communication through computer, radio and satellite technologies, handling explosives, catering, health and safety, personnel management etc.

As a Reservist, there are many skills that you will develop on the way; hence you will be a valuable asset to any business. This training gives you an edge over other candidates. There is a certain amount that you will be paid for your commitments. If your earnings as a civil are greater than your Service pay, then you can claim the difference. There are also certain benefits that you can claim when your employer suspends while you are mobilised. These benefits include health insurance, life insurance which is paid by your employer, educational fees for dependent children, accommodation provided by your employer and other benefits provided by your employer.

Thus, there is an overall amount cap that you can claim which is around £548 per day (around £200,000 a year). The cap is £822 per day (equivalent to around £300,000 a year), if you are serving as a Medical Consultant with the Defence Medical Services. There are also claims for certain allowable expenses that do not count towards the cap like costs for care of a dependant child or relative, costs for care of a pet, essential maintenance on your home, and extra insurance for leaving your home empty. There are also other financial supports, pension and compensation benefits on becoming a Reservist.
